EOFY Networking Event: The MACq1 story

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to hear the inside story behind one of Tasmania’s most exciting & newest hotels, MACq1, from the team behind it.

We will be interviewing their HR Manager & General Manager to gain a fascinating insight from a model and design perspective to the operational on the ground implementation process. How they took a concept and made it a reality.

Speaker: Jake Smith, General Manager, MACq 01 Hotel

Born and raised in Tasmania, Jake has always considered the state home. A graduate of Drysdale TAFE and the University of Tasmania he began his Tourism and Hospitality career in restaurants both front of house and in kitchens.

In 2004 Jake joined the pre-opening team of The Henry Jones Art Hotel and this is where his career really began, throughout his career Jake has taken up the opportunity to work in a variety of roles and properties including Wrest Point Hotel, Saffire Freycinet as well as in remote areas of the state including Cradle Mountain and Strahan Village.

Jake is now the General Manager of the MACq 01 Hotel which opened in June 2017.

Speaker: Nancy Swain, Human Resources Manager, Federal Group- Tourism

Nancy is a proud Tasmanian initially graduating through Drysdale Hospitality College (a few years before Jake), Nancy cut her teeth at Sheraton Hobart Hotel (currently the Grand Chancellor) as Front Office Manager and through a wonderful mentor started in ‘personnel management’.

Transitioning into recruitment and consulting Nancy spread her wings to London and spent five years working in occupational psychology, consulting with a range of FTSE 100 companies across Europe along with completing a Masters in Human Resources.

A young family drew Nancy back to Hobart, working in a number of change, OD and human resource management positions - with the highlight being the opportunity to work on opening a property such as MACq 01 and the talented team behind it.
