Sustainable HR for 21st Century Business

Evidence from businesses listed in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) indicates that businesses need not compromise on profit while implementing a corporate sustainability business strategy. In fact, a sustainability strategy improves profits. Global Reporting Initiatives (GRI) for Sustainability, a global institution, sets guidelines for businesses to accomplish positive integrated financial, human/social and environmental outcomes which contribute to corporate sustainability.

More than 600 large corporations around the world have started incorporating GRI guidelines in business strategies and practices, research shows more than 90% of corporations have difficulty achieving integrated corporate sustainability outcomes. One of the reasons for this is that current HRM strategies and practices are limited in their ability to accomplish integrated corporate sustainability outcomes. Sustainable HRM is a new and emerging field in HRM which provides frameworks for HR and management professionals to gain competencies necessary to achieve corporate sustainability.

Sugumar and Robin are leading international scholars who have shaped the field of sustainable HRM for the past twenty years. Both have jointly conducted similar workshops in Belgium, Germany, India, New Zealand and the Netherlands.

This workshop guides HR and management professionals to gain insights into sustainable HRM practices necessary to handle the changes required for a corporate sustainability business strategy as well as the changes required in stakeholders’ sustainability expectations.

A must workshop for senior HR and business leaders to re-think their approach to HR, to explore innovative and practical approaches to HRM through the lens of sustainability and to engage in addressing the challenges entailed in achieving corporate sustainability.

Speaker: Sugumar Mariappandar PhD

Sugumar is passionate to facilitate HR and management professionals to gain insights into sustainable HRM practices. This is evidenced by his publication (2019) of internationally first book on “Sustainable HRM: Strategies, Practices and Challenges” which is published by Macmillan International, UK.

Sugumar is an organisational psychologist and he had active involvement with the APS College of Organisational Psychologists, including leadership roles in many sub-committees and involved as one of the Editors-in-Chief of the College journal, Australasian Journal of Organisational Psychology.

Speaker: Robin Kramar PhD

Robin is currently writing a book on Sustainable HRM with Professor Alex Vanderstraaten and is a Visiting Professor at the University of Gent.

For many years, Robin has had an association with AHRI, including as a member of Awards judging panels, Editor of the journal, Asia Pacific Journal of Human Resources and member of the Advisory Research Panel.
