Managing Conflict and Complexity in the Workplace: Two models for deep thinking about resilience in the COVID environment.
This webinar will explore two ways to think more deeply about the ideas of complexity, resilience, and conflict in our workplaces. While the models have been evolving over time, their importance has been enlivened by the workplace changes emerging from COVID.
The first model, ‘Edge of Chaos’, challenges us to think about the pressures or influences which push teams towards the ‘accident boundary’, and the traits or characteristics which help teams to push back and continue to operate at an optimal point; the ‘edge of chaos’. What emerges from this model is that much of the resilience in complex organisations is non-technical; it’s about relationships and culture.
Taking the importance of relationships as a starting point, the second model challenges us to think about the neuroscience that drives conflict behaviour in our teams, and how we can use this knowledge to build the capacity of leaders and managers to have a more constructive approach to conflict.
Attendees will come away from this presentation with two new conceptual frameworks, and a handful of pragmatic strategies to build resilient teams.

Speaker: Ben Freedman
Ben Freedman is a lecturer in conflict analysis, founder of AboutResolution, and patient safety specialist. He has a special interest in how health practitioners negotiate and engage in workplace conflict and the impact on safety culture. Ben has built on this interest through membership on the Queensland Paediatric Quality Council’s Clinical Incident Subcommittee, the Mental Health Alcohol and Other Drugs Branch Quality Assurance Committee, and the Townsville University Hospital’s Clinical Council.
Ben has a Masters in conflict management and resolution, and his research on healthcare workplace conflict has been published in Collegian, the Australasian Journal of Clinical Education, and ADR Research Network. Since founding AboutResolution, Ben has been engaged by a range of federal, state and private health organisations to consult, investigate and educate in the conflict resolution space. Ben is a nationally accredited mediator, currently working towards accreditation as a Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner.
